The Duke of Edinburgh's Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is one of the most rewarding and challenging opportunities available to young people. At LGGS, we are proud to offer all three levels of the Award; Bronze, Silver and Gold giving students the chance to develop new skills, build confidence, contribute to their community and enjoy unforgettable outdoor experiences.

Taking part in DofE helps students grow in independence, resilience and teamwork. These qualities are highly valued by universities, employers and apprenticeship providers, making the Award an excellent addition to any students future pathway.

What Is the DofE Award?

The DofE Award is a nationally recognised programme for young people aged 14–24. Each level involves completing four sections:

  • Volunteering – giving time to help others

  • Physical – improving fitness and wellbeing

  • Skill – developing a new talent or interest

  • Expedition – planning and completing a challenging journey

Gold participants also complete a residential experience.

Students choose their own activities, allowing them to tailor the award to their interests and goals.

DofE at LGGS

We offer a well established and highly supported DofE programme:

Bronze Award (Year 9)

Students begin their DofE journey by developing new skills, volunteering locally and taking part in a two day expedition. This level builds confidence and introduces students to the core elements of the Award.

Silver Award (Year 10)

Participants build on their Bronze experience with longer commitments and a more challenging expedition. Students develop greater independence and teamwork skills.

Gold Award (Sixth Form)

Our most advanced level includes extended volunteering, skill and physical sections, a four‑day expedition and a residential stay. Gold participants often describe this as one of the most memorable experiences of their time at LGGS.

Expeditions

Expeditions are a highlight of the DofE experience. Students learn:

  • Navigation and map reading

  • Campcraft and outdoor cooking

  • Teamwork and leadership

  • Problem solving and resilience

Expeditions take place in a variety of landscapes, giving students the chance to explore beautiful areas while developing independence and confidence. All expeditions are supervised by trained staff and follow national safety guidelines.

Why Take Part?

Students who complete DofE gain:

  • Increased confidence and resilience

  • Stronger teamwork and leadership skills

  • A sense of achievement and independence

  • New friendships and experiences

  • A respected award recognised by universities and employers

The Award encourages students to challenge themselves, discover new interests and make a positive contribution to their community.
