Routes Into Languages Northwest Competition

Mother Tongue, Other Tongue Competition 2020

Pupils from LGGS once again took part in the regional poetry competition run jointly by Manchester Metropolitan University and Routes into Languages Northwest, and the quality of work submitted was second to none.  The task for 'Other Tongue' was to devise a poem in French, Spanish or German, whilst the 'Mother Tongue' category was for pupils who speak a different language at home, inviting them to recount a poem in their native language and explain, in English, its significance.

The majority of entries were created during lockdown, demonstrating humbling levels of motivation, innovation and a passion to make links to other languages and cultures.  The languages department were bowled over by the thought, care and depth of the work submitted. We had forty two entries in total as a school and selected ten finalists which were submitted to the regional final.  The subject of poems ranged from chameleons to how much we value friendship, the plight of the guanaco to not be confused with a llama and the Spanish Civil War!
