Care
Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination students design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of context, considering their own and other’s needs and wants and values. Students learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, resilient, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world, including in the Year 7, 8 and Year 12 curriculum an understanding and application of the principles of nutrition and how to cook for their and others personal well-being.

Students are supported to take ownership of their ideas and to have the confidence to realise and implement them to produce high quality products of which they can be proud and achieve a sense of personal satisfaction.

Contribute
The subject of Design and Technology makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation. Through the Design and Technology curriculum students gain an awareness of the real-life and practical application of knowledge and skills learnt in disciplines such as maths, science and art. They develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. Students have opportunities to contribute in many ways in the curriculum and beyond through; modelling how designers and engineers work collaboratively through group and team work to solve and overcome problems, communication and sharing of ideas using a large variety of techniques, and in planning and sharing of equipment and resources. In addition students are encouraged to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities and competitions including Year 7 Institute of Marine Engineering workshops; Year 7 & 8 STEM club and Bronze Crest Awards assisted by Year 10 D of E students; Year 7 & 8 Cookery Club run by Year 12; Year 8 IET Faraday Challenge competition; Yr9 Institute of Manufacturing Make it competition; Yr9 Royal Society of Engineers Master Classes, and Year 9 STEM Challenge at Lancaster University; Years 9 to 12 Vex robotics competition. Careers events including Year 10 Big Bang Fare ( NEC); Year 10 Girls into Engineering Day organised with the Engineering Department at Lancaster University; Year 11 Engineering Your future; various Smallpeice Trust residential schemes at a wide variety of universities; successful application for Arkwright Engineering Scholarship; Sixth Form visit to the Product Design Conference at Warwick University and entry to the Young Engineer for Great Britain competition.

Challenge
Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination students design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of context, considering their own and other’s needs and wants and values. Through a variety of creative and practical activities, students are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making. They work in a range of domestic and local context e.g. home, health, leisure and culture and industrial context e.g. engineering, construction, food and fashion. Students are taught to independently research and explore to identify the needs and wants of users to develop specifications to inform the design of innovative, functional, appealing products that respond to needs in a variety of situations. They are encouraged to avoid stereotypical solutions and to reformulate their own design to generate creative ideas. They use sketches, plans, mathematical and 3D modelling, oral, digital and computer based tools to test and convey ideas. They are encouraged to understand the impact on individuals, society and the environment of the design and manufacture of products and the social responsibility of designers, engineers and technologist.

KS3 Technology Learning Overview
