16-19 BURSARY FUND
Financial support available to 16-19 students: Although the EMA has now finished for students starting sixth form in September 2011, there are other sources of funding which you may be eligible for.
Transport costs
For the 2011/12 academic year Lancashire County Council will continue to offer Transport Grants for School Sixth Formers. Grants for eligible students range from £100 to £500 per annum on a sliding scale, dependent on distance from home to school (minimum 2 miles) and household income in the 2010/11 tax year (maximum £39,999).
The grant is paid directly into the student's bank account each term provided an attendance level of 95% or above is confirmed by the School Sixth Form. Students can apply online from 1st August.
However applications will not be processed until after enrolment when the student will need to forward a signed Learning Agreement from the Sixth Form to the Transport Grants Team at Lancashire County Council.
Further information can be obtained from the Transport Grant Team

Bursary Fund
There are bursary funds which you may apply for. The LGGS policy on bursary funds will be on our website in the sixth form section shortly, as well as the application forms which will also be available from the sixth form office at the start of term. If you think you may be eligible under one of the following categories, please read the policy and fill in the relevant application forms which should be returned to school as soon as possible and no later than Friday 16th September.
Compulsory Bursary Fund Awards (Priority 1)
The scheme guarantees bursary payments of £1,200 for 2011/12 to certain groups of students deemed most in need of financial support. £1,200 per annum paid in instalments will be paid to the following eligible students:
- Young people who are 16-18 years, living independently and claiming Income Support
- Young people who are looked after by the Local Authority
- Students who are disabled and in receipt of both Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance
- Young people who are Care Leavers
- Young people who are 16-18 years, a parent and receiving Income Support
- Young people who are 16-18 years and receive Income Support for any reason
Discretionary Bursary Fund Awards (Priority 2 & Priority 3)
The balance of the school’s Bursary Fund allocation remaining, once all Priority awards have been taken into account, can then be used by it to make discretionary Bursary awards to other students most in need of financial assistance to enable them to remain in full time education. Receipt of a Bursary will be conditional on the student meeting agreed targets set by the school as outlined in the sixth form contract.
Priority 2 – Students in receipt of Free School Meals will be eligible to receive a Bursary award of up to
£800 for 2011/12.
Priority 3 – In the event of funding remaining within the school’s Bursary Fund allocation once all Priority 1
and 2 awards have been made, awards of up to £500 will be made to students of families in receipt of tax
credits with an additional household income of up to £20,817. This priority will be reviewed in November
and if there is still funding available, the eligibility criteria will be changed to £25,521 and students will be
invited to apply for the awards.
If you are unsure about what to do, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Cahalin or the Heads of Sixth Form for advice.
