Modern Foreign Languages Department
In Modern Foreign Languages we aim to develop pupils' ability to communicate confidently and effectively in the target language, and to learn more about the culture of the countries where the language is spoken.
This plays a significant role in pupils' social and cultural development as it encourages openness and social confidence. Through immersion in the language in the classroom pupils develop their speaking and listening skills at an accelerated pace, and gain a firm grounding in grammar through learning rules and language patterns in context. Pupils also develop a wide vocabulary and a range of idiomatic expressions which equip them to express themselves with increasing independence. There are regular opportunities to practise their skills through participating in regular trips and exchanges with our partner schools abroad. Pupils frequently sustain these initial contacts and many go on to study a foreign language in Higher Education.
