The department seeks to open the eyes of its students to the complexities surrounding the Media, (print-based , audio-visual and electronic). Not only is much that is writtren about the Media (in the Media!) negative, but numerous myths about the Media are perpertrated.
Add to these considerations, the potential impact of the Media upon society and government and then the need (perhaps even the imperative) to study this subject becomes clear. Many 'consumers' of the Media take it for grated, giving it little thought. Once embarked upon the AS/A2 course, it is not long before Media Studies students are taking nothing for grated and are busily asking questions of what they watch, read or listen to.
