Lancaster Girls' Grammar School is a selective state school with a very strong academic record, but great emphasis is also placed on the development of the "whole person". Whilst retaining the highest academic standards and pursuing excellence in all its forms, we are constantly changing in the light of educational developments.

Drama, Music, Sport, community involvement and international experience are all very important elements of school life. There are 862 girls in the school, of whom 300 are sixth-formers following A-level courses (March 2010).
The school is heavily over-subscribed.

The school became a Technology College on 1st April, 1995 after gaining sponsorship from local firms, including BAe Systems. In 1998, 2001, 2006 and most recently in 2009, the school was re-designated as a Technology College. In 2006, the school also became a Language College. This combined status provides additional funding particularly in the areas of Mathematics, Science, Technology and Languages. One of the most far-reaching initiatives resulting from Technology College funding has been the creation of new links with seven of our feeder primary schools, and these are now being extended as a result of Language College funding.

LGGS is providing staff who are working with the primaries in the teaching of French, Mathematics and Science, In 2003, LGGS was proud to be designated as one of the first group of Leading Edge schools in England.

Within this programme, new teaching materials, as well as other exciting, collaborative and innovative research projects
are being developed in partnership with three local secondary schools.
Our aim is to give students in this school as many opportunities as possible. The range of extra-curricular activities, and the levels of student participation are exceptional. All Year 7 pupils have the opportunity to participate in an annual French visit, which takes place in the Summer terms to the region around Le Touquet. Later in their school life students have the opportunity to participate in exchange visits to France, Germany, and Spain.

The school has been granted International School status by the British Council as a result of the progressive approach which has been taken
towards international links. We have participated in five Comenius projects, working in collaboration with Schools in many European countries on curriculum projects. We are particularly proud of our Indian link and 2009 was the sixth year of exchanges. Other international links include an exchange programme with a leading science school in Thailand and a China study visit.

The school has a happy, relaxed atmosphere and discipline is not a word we have to use very often. We place a great deal of emphasis on self-discipline and trust.

Parents particularly value the way we are able to maintain high academic standards and still provide and encourage a full range of extracurricular activities to enable students to become mature, confident adults.
In the words of one of our parents:
"No school is perfect but LGGS is pretty close!"

Jackie Cahalin, Headteacher
