Lancaster Girls' Grammar School
English Department

In English, we aim to engage, excite and broaden pupils’ literary horizons through a thematic and skills-based curriculum, rich in contemporary and classic fiction, media and non-fiction texts. Pupils are encouraged to write for “real” audiences and purposes, and to master functional skills and grammatical accuracy, whilst fostering a passion for creative and imaginative writing.
At all Key Stages, students explore and appreciate texts’ historical and cultural
contexts, and are taught to

adopt a range of reading strategies to add challenge and variety to their learning experience.  Speaking and Listening skills are taught and assessed explicitly
whilst forming the foundation for whole-school and regional enrichment activities, such as ‘Public Speaking’ and inter-schools debating at Sixth Form level.
Stretch, challenge and support are core elements of English, and students throw themselves into cross- and
extra-curricular activities to enrich their learning.
National poetry writing
competitions, theatre trips, ‘Readathons’, creative writing $ book groups, the Sixth Form Imperial War Museum, theatre trips, Lancashire Children’s Book of the Year awards & spelling bees are just some of the opportunities offered to pupils to fully appreciate the joys of English.
