Women in Science Competition Winners
Lancaster University Trip
After winning the Women in Science competition, A Verma
and
I, as well as the runners up A Rhodes and B Thomas,
were given the opportunity to spend the day in the Biomedical Sciences and Physics departments at Lancaster University.
Dr Jane Taylor, Associate Dean, gave us a general overview
of the University’s structure and we discussed the
ever-growing role of women scientists. We spent the rest
of the day shadowing some of the most successful female scientists at Lancaster.
Chromatography is a crucial technique in genetics, so we spent the first hour of the day with Dr Jane Owen-Lynch who showed us and explained many different modern chromatography techniques, using revolutionary equipment.
Dr Penny Fouldes gave an hour of her time to show us her new project which researched into Alzheimer’s Disease. We went into a cold storage room and saw post mortem samples of a human brain.
We then experimented with liquid nitrogen: freezing and smashing tomatoes.
After a brief introduction to parasitology by PhD student Katie Towers, we lunched with Professor Faridey, Dr Taylor and
Mrs Brown!
The day ended with an in-depth presentation about Particle Physics which unfortunately went way above our heads. Nevertheless we had a brilliant day. Thank you to everyone at Lancaster University and to Mrs Brown for organising the event and giving us this wonderful opportunity
