Welcome

Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School is a selective state school with a very strong academic record, but great emphasis is also placed on the development of the“whole person”. Whilst retaining the highest academic standards and pursuing
excellence in all its forms, we are constantly changing in the light of educational developments. Drama, Music, Sport, community involvement and international experience are all very important elements of school life. There are 898 girls in the school, of whom 333 are sixth-formers following A-level courses (17.09.07). The school is heavily over-subscribed.

The school became a Technology College on 1st April 1995 after gaining sponsorship from local firms, including BAe Systems. In 1998, 2001 and again in 2006, the school was redesignated as a Technology College. In 2006, the school also became a Language College. This combined status provides additional funding particularly in the areas of Mathematics, Science, Technology and Languages. One of the most far-reaching initiatives resulting from Technology College funding has been the creation of new links with six of our feeder primary schools, and these are now being extended as a result of Language College funding. LGGS is providing staff who are working with the primaries in the teaching of French, Mathematics and Science, and providing technical assistance for ICT. In 2003, LGGS was proud to be designated as one of the first group of Leading Edge schools in England. Within this programme, new teaching materials, as well as other exciting, collaborative and innovative research projects are being developed in partnership with 3 local secondary schools.

Our aim is to give students in this school as many opportunities as possible. The range of extra-curricular activities, and the levels of student participation are exceptional. All Year 7 pupils have the opportunity to participate in an annual French visit, which takes place in the Summer term to the region around Le Touquet. Later in their school life, students have the opportunity to participate in exchange visits to France, Germany and Spain.

The school has been granted International School status by the British Council as a result of the progressive approach which has been taken towards international links. We have participated in five Comenius projects, working in collaboration with schools in many European countries on curriculum projects. Many of these have been science-based. We have also been privileged to participate in the International Science Fair with high-achieving schools in South-East Asia and the Pacific Ring for the last three years. We have links with Madagascar and our students are actively involved in fundraising for our partner school. We are particularly proud of our Indian link and 2007 is the fourth year of exchanges. We are also developing links with schools in China and Thailand, with visits planned for 2008.

The school has a happy, relaxed atmosphere and discipline is not a word we have to use very often. We place a great deal of emphasis on self-discipline and trust.

Ofsted 2006: “The girls’ attitude to learning, their relationships with one another, and their behaviour and attendance are exemplary.”

Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School seeks to educate the girls for the future. We expect our students to be well-prepared for the world they will encounter after leaving school, and have the ability to think in an independent and perceptive manner.
