Royal Society of Chemistry's 'Top of the Bench' Regional Final Competition Winners

21st Jan 2020

Congratulations to the Year 9 chemistry team who have won the regional final of the Royal Society of Chemistry's 'Top of the Bench' competition at Lancaster University on Saturday 11th January.

The day was split into three parts. For the first part, we had to work together to figure out who really was Santa. We used our chromatography skills to find out the pen ink and our knowledge of pH’s to find out which powder was the fake snow. The last step was a bit more challenging. We had to try and match the fingerprint on the glass to the suspect’s fingerprints and figure out what type of lines they each had on their fingers.
The next part was less fun since it was a test. It was a bit challenging, but we tried our best. The final part was great fun. We had to try and launch our rocket as far as we could by electrolysing water to use the hydrogen and we also used custard. Our first attempt was very successful, but the others weren’t as successful. However, the day was overall fun and interesting, especially since we got to work in a professional lab which was very cool. Sana-Fatima Ashrafi

In the competition, we had to find out who the secret Santa was! To do this Sana and I had to do some chromatography, test our different powders and look at fingerprints which matched Santa.
Overall, I found this experience really exhilarating and it gave me a further understanding of what it would be like if I went on to do chemistry in the future. I can’t wait to progress to the final round in March! Hajira Afzal

Next stop the grand final!
