International Week 2018

28th Sep 2018

International Week

LGGS kick started the year once more with a fantastically vibrant International Week. Students of all year groups came together, joined by the staff, to experience and celebrate diversity and the richness of the cultures of the world.

The International Food Fair opened the week, where parents, students and staff, ably led by Mrs Hutchinson, cooked up delicacies from across the globe from samosas to ceviche.

Year 7 were able to experience a morning of multicultural madness, learning to tie a sari, singing in foreign languages and energetically dancing to their heart’s content. Meanwhile Year 8 got to experience four different linguistic or cultural activities, particularly relishing the opportunity to learn some Bollywood dance moves from some of their peers. Year 9 had the luxury of an afternoon off timetable to watch the thought provoking Arabic film set in Saudi Arabia of a young girl’s plight to own and ride a bike, giving them a flavour of a very different culture to that of our small world upon a hill.

All pupils were able to enjoy an array of language lessons and cultural workshops at lunchtime run by our own girls or staff; whether learning Korean or becoming familiar with the strict rules of Boules, there was something for everyone.

The week culminated as ever, with the international dress up day and foreign language karaoke at lunchtime, where the whole school rounded off the week with a stunning, spontaneous performance of ‘La Macarena’. The week was a huge success thanks to the participation and enthusiasm of all of our staff and students, and also raised money for Save the Children’s: East Africa food crisis appeal. Many thanks to all who were involved.
