Welcome to our Sixth Form

Welcome to the next stage in your academic journey.

The choice that you make for your Sixth Form studies is an important one and should enable you to flourish, to grow in confidence and to be ready to make aspirational decisions for your future. We are proud of the resilience that our students develop during their Sixth Form years and of the way they develop as leaders within LGGS and in the wider community.

Every year we are delighted to welcome a large number of students into Y12 from other high schools locally, from schools farther afield in the UK and from overseas. These students settle quickly, greatly enriching our school community and making friends for life.

Our Sixth Form is an exciting and inspirational environment where you will be challenged to be the best that you can be, both academically and personally, as you prepare for the next stage in your journey, knowing that you will be supported every step of the way, and we look forward to welcoming you into Year 12.

Why LGGS?

We know that whether you join LGGS in Year 12 or whether you were here from Year 7, you will enjoy the purposeful learning environment that our Sixth Form offers. We will nurture your love of learning and you will appreciate the greater independence that you have as a Sixth Form student, you will grow as a person, have lots of fun and make friends for life.

We are consistently ranked as the most successful state school in Lancashire in the Sunday Times Parent Power table and in 2022 our Sixth Form was judged to be ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, something that our students and parents already knew for themselves.

With the best A Level results in Lancashire at the important A*-B level, LGGS Sixth Formers know that they are in safe hands, but the Sixth Form experience at LGGS is about so much more. The broad academic curriculum we offer is complemented by a comprehensive programme of Enrichment and Wellbeing opportunities as well as many opportunities to develop valuable leadership skills. We challenge our students to aspire to great things and our exceptional pastoral care plays an important part in preparing our students to be ready to take on the challenges they meet with confidence.

We hold a Work Experience week for Year 12 students during the summer term so that they can experience life in the professional workplace, and this can play a valuable part in shaping the decisions they make about their future applications. We also offer numerous foreign trips, including visits to Iceland, Paris and Berlin, alongside the languages exchange visits, the European music tour and the ski trip.

What students think

After joining LGGS sixth form from a different school I was welcomed into a new and friendly environment. I feel a real sense of belonging at LGGS, have made many friends in my time here and have been supported throughout my A-level studies and university application process immensely. Madison

My seven years at LGGS have been fantastic. In the sixth form especially, there is amazing support for whatever needs you have, academic or pastoral, from both subject teachers and sixth form team who never fail to go above and beyond. I don't think I could have chosen a better school or sixth form. Kate

Coming from the perspective of a new student, LGGS was so accepting and welcoming. It genuinely felt like I’d been here since Year 7. If anyone is worried about starting at a new school, don’t be. I’ve had the most amazing 2 years, with the loveliest people and I’m really going to miss it. Emily

When I first joined LGGS all the way back in Year 7, I had no idea that it would become such an integral part of helping me grow into the person I am today. Especially regarding the sixth form, the staff have been more supportive than I had ever imagined. They are just as passionate about my goals as I am, and it feels like everyone is so connected, like a little family! I will definitely miss this school a lot, and all the amazing friends I have made here. I am glad that I had the honour of attending such a place that has helped me to mature and become confident enough to achieve things I would never have thought of otherwise. Go LGGS! :) Eshaal

LGGS Sixth Form provided me with a very supportive and challenging academic experience. The teachers are all highly experienced and always available to offer guidance and support. All the Sixth form staff are working to make every student feel valued and well-prepared for the future. Along with excellent academic offerings, the shcool offers a vast range of extracurriculars. As one of the leader of the Maths Society, I have thoroughly enjoyed the role and it allowed me to connect with like-minded students. Overall, I had a wonderful time at LGGS Sixth Form. As I am preparing for university life, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences and growth that I gained during my time here. Xia

During the last two years, I have grown and achieved so much on both an academic and personal level - exceeding even my own expectations. This is, no doubt, due to the guidance that I have received from the Sixth Form team who have been very generous with their time and advice. I don’t think it is possible for anywhere to have a more inclusive and welcoming environment; I feel immensely privileged to have been part of the LGGS Sixth form community, and am sorry that my time here has come to an end. I will stay in touch! Anna

Leaving school is our first step into the real world. Although it will always be scary, there is no better place than LGGS to prepare you for it. In our small world, we are nurtured into the best versions of ourselves by not just the staff but also the students. Little did we know that those were some of the best days of our life. LGGS is more than a school; it is a family. Tirtha

Academic and pastoral support

The Sixth Form team is proud of the high level of personalised care and support that they provide to all Year 12 and 13 students. We know how important their wellbeing is for students to be able to the make excellent academic progress that they aim for, and someone is always on hand to provide advice and guidance, whether this be academic or pastoral.

We are also fortunate to have a dedicated Sixth Form Learning Mentor who works with students on a one-to-one basis, supporting their academic progress and helping them with organisation and study skills, which can greatly ease the transition to A level study and Form Tutors are also closely involved in supporting the progress of all students in their form.

The support we give students with preparing for their future beyond LGGS is second to none. We start our extensive UCAS programme early in Year 12, so that students are well-informed about the opportunities they have, and this support extends beyond Year 13 for those students who wish to take a gap year before applying to university. Every student receives detailed and personal guidance as they prepare their applications, whether this be for university entrance or for degree apprenticeships, and they can arrange a meeting with our careers advisor at any time.

Destinations

While the majority of LGGS Sixth Form students choose to apply to university, we recognise that the landscape is constantly changing and that for many a degree apprenticeship is a more attractive option. We welcome guest speakers from a wide range of universities as well as those who come in to guide students applying for degree apprenticeships and typically we will have at least 40 speakers come in to school during Year 12.

A large number of our students go on to prestigious Russell Group universities, with Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool and Manchester being popular choices, as well as Glasgow, Edinburgh and Lancaster. Alongside this many of our students are successful in taking up places on more vocational courses at Northumbria, Edgehill and UCLAN. In recent years we have also been delighted to see our Year 13 students gain places on prestigious degree apprenticeships with organisations such as BAE, Dyson, EDF and GCHQ.

We give carefully tailored and intensive support to those students applying to the most competitive courses at Oxford and Cambridge, and also those applying for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science, and we are very proud of the successes our students achieve. All of these courses interview applicants and we draw upon a great wealth of support from parents and the wider community to be able to hold a Mock Interview Night early in Year 13, where students have a chance to practise and hone their skills as they are interviewed by academics and experienced professionals.
