Science
In Science we aim to develop in students a curiosity and a fascination with the physical world, from the tiniest sub-atomic particles, to molecules, cells, living organisms, galaxies and black holes. We want our students to ask questions, and to develop the skills, understanding and knowledge to set about answering them.
Care
In Science lessons students are encouraged to think about caring for themselves, each other and the World around them. There are many opportunities for students to work collaboratively whether it be in investigative work or group tasks. They evaluate risk to themselves and also to each other. Certain topics relate to caring for the World around them for example renewable energy, damage to the planet caused by Greenhouse gases, life cycle assessments, recycling. Other topics focus on learning how to care for themselves: diet, exercise, risks of smoking and drugs. Peer mentoring across all Science subjects is well established for all year groups, and there are many opportunities for students to seek help from staff outside lesson time.
Contribute
Science lessons are designed to be supportive and engaging, where students are encouraged to actively contribute to their learning. Contributing to practical tasks, being involved in presentations to others, and working with others on group tasks are activities embedded in Science lessons from year 7 up. Being able to evaluate data, question reliability of information and formulate ideas based on evidence and the scientific method are all key skills which allow students to contribute to society now and in the future.
Outside the classroom there are opportunities for students to contribute. The Science ambassador programme in Year 8 will see a small group of students have the opportunity to lead, contribute and inspire others by studying topics above the level of their curriculum and then feeding back to younger students. Students from Year 8-10 represent the School at RSC Salters chemistry competitions. Three Year 13 students every year undertake a Science research project of their choosing, often in collaboration with Lancaster or UCLan, and then present their findings on a global scale at the Japan Super Science Fair.
Challenge
The Science curriculum is designed to be rigorous, challenging and stimulating for all learners.
Opportunities to further stretch and challenge are provided, for example: the Olympiad papers, research projects undertaken at Lancaster University as part of the Physics A-level, field study trips abroad as part of the Biology A-level course, the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge, Science ambassadors, KS3 STEM club. Challenge also arises in the role of mentor when explaining and tutoring challenging concepts to other learners.
Challenge in Science lessons will be further developed this year as part of staff development in a PLC.
