Care
Psychology is the scientific study of people: how they think, act, react and interact. It is concerned with all aspects of behaviour and the thoughts, feelings and motivations underlying such behaviour. Psychology is a popular subject in the Sixth Form and students enjoy relating their learning to the world around them. Staff follow the AQA specification and are mindful of the impact of certain topics on specific individuals. Staff seek to review and appraisal the curriculum with students to meet the needs of what can often be a diverse cohort. The pastoral nature of our subject and our staff seems to encourage some pupils to approach us for support when needed.
Contribute
Our pupils come from diverse backgrounds and through the study of Psychology we hope to equip them with a better understanding of the wider world.
It is a safe space for discussing different viewpoints, reflecting on personal attitudes and recognising how different views have influence in societies and cultures. Pupils have opportunities to contribute in many ways in the curriculum and beyond through Psychology society and the visiting speakers. Our link to the University of Central Lancashire Psychology department also gives students the chance to participate in research that will be published.
Challenge
Psychology is compatible with both science and arts based subjects and the specification is interesting, engaging and applies to everyday issues. The course involves the study of a variety of psychological research. Students become familiar with the methodology of scientific enquiry and problem solving; they also acquire high-order analytical and numeracy skills as well as becoming accomplished in communication through construction of coherent, well-reasoned argument. In these ways, students attain a broad set of skills which prepare them for higher education and a wide range of careers. Students who have taken the A-Level have successfully gained places for degrees in not only in Psychology but also Medicine, Law, Neuroscience, Physiology, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Business Studies, Health Studies and many more besides.
